A Canberra man molested while a schoolboy at Marist College has won a payout of $75,000.

And the Trustees of the Marist Brothers will also pay a further $60,000 in costs.

Court documents said the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, suffered psychiatric injury when convicted paedophile John Chute, also known as Brother Kostka, sexually assaulted him in 1978.

Chute was jailed for at least two years in 2008, followed by a year of weekend detention, for molesting six boys at Marist College in the 1980s.

Publicity surrounding the abuse prompted a flood of civil claims against the school since 2007.

The majority of claims settled out-of-court, with the payouts remaining confidential.

The recent matter was finalised in the ACT Supreme Court with the approval of Justice Richard Refshauge last week.
