A 63-year-old Canberra man was allegedly pinged 19km/h over the limit near Jugiong, Southern NSW - while hauling 23 tonnes of brake parts down the Hume Highway.

Police said NSW Highway Patrol issued the man with a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the heavy vehicle speed limit by more than 10km/h, and a defect notice for a non-compliant speed limiter.

The officers were a part of Operation Highway 31, an initiative aimed at cutting the road toll on the Hume Highway.

NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said speedings motorists needed to slow down.

“Drivers and operators that continue to speed run a very great risk not only to themselves, their companies and their customers, but also to other road users,” he said.

“If you speed in NSW, you can expect to be detected and intercepted by Operation Highway 31 officers.”
