Emergency services received more than 500 calls for help after yesterday's rain storm lashed Canberra.

Rain gauges recorded more than 80 millimetres in Tuggeranong which bore the brunt of the storm activity.

Wind gusts of up to 74 kilometres an hour were also recorded.

The heavy deluge caused drains to backed up, power lines to come down and leaking roofs all over Canberra.

Emergency Services Agency chief Dominic Lane says State Emergency Service crews worked late into the night to repair the damage.

"Many drains and gutters overflowed throughout the city and of course then put water back into buildings and into carpets and things like so very busy just cleaning that up and helping people get back to normal."

SES crews are still out responding to storm jobs this morning.

The Wanniassa School senior campus has asked students to stay at home today if possible because of water damage to classrooms.
