UPDATE 3.50PM: Police have found a baby that was inside a car stolen in Canberra's north on Thursday afternoon.
Police said the eight-month-old baby has been found safe and well nearly two hours after a man stole the car with the infant inside.
The offender has fled on foot and police said all available resources were searching for the man in the Gungahlin area.
Detective Superintendent Kenton Turner said the car with the baby inside was taken from Yarrawonga Street in Ngunnawal.
The infant was found by a member of the public inside the car at 3.45pm, about one kilometre from where he was taken.
Detective Supterintendent Turner said the mother and her baby were with police, and she was continuing to assist with their inquiries.
"The baby is safe and well and reunited with his parents," he said.
"I urge the community: do not approach this man."
Officers from Belconnen and Gungahlin are scouring the surrounding area for the man, who was described as being of slim build, Caucasian, aged in his 20s, wearing white Nike runners, shorts, a black t-shirt and a black baseball cap.
Police launched an appeal for public assistance in finding the silver 1999 Mazda 323 Protégé, taken from Ngunnawal in Gungahlin about 2pm with the baby boy inside.
Police said the mother had gone to the assistance of a man whose car had broken down when he jumped into her car and drove off with her son inside.
The spokeswoman said the car owner did not know the man.
Anyone who sees the man is urged not to approach him and to contact police on 000.
