The historic John Gorton Building in Canberra's Parliamentary Triangle has been wrapped in black material to protect pedestrians from falling sandstone tiles.

The Department of Finance building has been surrounded by hoarding as a safety measure after a report found the potential danger caused by the crumbling facade could be catastrophic.

The union representing public servants wants the site to be repaired swiftly to protect workers inside regardless of the cost.

Community and Public Sector Union deputy secretary Beth Vincent-Pietsch says the barrier will protect passers by, but full repairs should happen soon.

"It is sad to think that it had to get to that state before work was undertaken," she said.

"But at least now the hoarding is providing at least a physical barrier to stop those pieces of sandstone potentially killing somebody."

Ms Vincent-Pietsch says workers in the building would like to know how long it will take for the repairs.

"We were initially told that they had funding to start the work," she said.

"But we would like some certainty around the funding for the three years that they say it is going to take."
