A sudden thunderstorm brought rain, hail and lightning to Canberra this evening.

"Wind gusts of 93km/h, along with some hail and 25mm of rainfall in 10 minutes, were recorded at Canberra airport," the Bureau of Meteorology said.

The bureau had issued a severe thunderstorm warning as the storm hit about 6.30pm, but it quickly crossed the territory heading south-east towards the coast and the warning was lifted 45 minutes later.

"The immediate threat of severe thunderstorms has passed, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary," it said.

The bureau said severe thunderstorms had been detected on weather radar near Belconnen, Hall, Gungahlin and Gundaroo about 6.30pm.

"These thunderstorms are moving towards the southeast. They are forecast to affect Canberra Civic, Queanbeyan and Canberra Airport by 7pm," it said.

"Large hailstones and damaging winds are likely."
