Canberra’s Whovians will get the chance to see Doctor Who’s much-hyped 50th anniversary special on the big screen on November 24.

The special episode, titled “The Day of the Doctor”, will be one of the last episodes with current star Matt Smith and will also feature former time lord David Tennant and John Hurt.

It will be shown at Capitol Manuka and Dendy Canberra in 3D with a special short introduction filmed for cinema audiences.

But fans of the iconic British TV show who can’t get to the cinema needn’t worry.

The 50th anniversary special is also being broadcast simultaneously across the world in more than 75 countries on the morning of November 24, and will air on ABC1 at a time yet to be confirmed and repeated at 7.30pm.

The first episode of the science fiction epic was first broadcast on BBC One at 5.15pm on Saturday November 23, 1963.

Since then Doctor Who has become a pop culture juggernaut, with an estimated 80 million viewers and a place in history books as the longest running science fiction TV show in the world.

Star Matt Smith is leaving the series at the end of the year and Scottish actor Peter Capaldi will take over as the Doctor in the Christmas special episode.
