Prime Minister John Key will meet new Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott in Canberra on Wednesday evening though he is not expecting anything of substance to come from the meeting.
Mr Key flies over in the afternoon for dinner with Mr Abbott in Canberra and then comes back to Wellington about 4am on Thursday.
He says it is an important meeting and an opportunity to build on the rapport that already exists between him and Mr Abbott.
Foreign ministers Murray McCully and Julie Bishop will be meeting in Auckland on Wednesday afternoon for their first six-monthly meeting.
Both Mr Abbott and Ms Bishop were in Indonesia on Monday night.
