The National Gallery of Australia in Canberra has unveiled a unique exhibition of contemporary art drawn from Africa.
The works, by renowned South African artist William Kentridge, are on show in a free exhibition entitled 'William Kentridge: Drawn from Africa'.
His work includes drawings, films, printmaking, tapestry designs and opera productions.
Senior curator Jane Kinsman says the works by Kentridge are on display for the first time at the National Gallery.
"I started collecting this work in 2000, but this is the first time they've been shown," she said.
Ms Kinsman says the works are imaginative, political and humorous.
"It's intriguing, it's delightful, but there's an undercurrent of serious issues that are being thought about," she said.
"He deals with issues coming from apartheid South Africa, but also what's happening now.
"He does it with an extraordinary lightness of touch and he has a wonderful sense of history.
"He draws on 19th century Tzarist books."
The free exhibition is open until November 3.
