Canberra Times, June 5
6:42am: And on the front page today, yep, you guessed it, it's all about the budget.
Chief Assembly reporter Peter Jean's comment piece on Treasurer Andrew Barr's budget is good read over your morning coffee.
Andrew Barr must have had two elections on his mind when preparing the budget - one to be held on September 14 this year, the other on October 16, 2016.
The first election will almost certainly see in a federal Coalition government and cuts to the Australian public service which hurt the ACT economy.
In the unlikely event the federal Labor government is re-elected, there will almost certainly be more cuts to the Australian public service which hurt the ACT economy.
And The Canberra Times' Editor at Large Jack Waterford has written our second front page piece on the ACT budget. It starts...
Three months from now, Andrew Barr, as a loyal member of the ALP suicide watch, will be telling ACT voters - and anyone elsewhere who will listen - that an Abbott Coalition government will be an economic catastrophe for the ACT.
There will be the spectre of John Howard and Peter Costello, the ''black hole'' cuts of 1996, and the ACT recession that followed, and, probably, for those with even longer memories, the impact of Malcolm Fraser's cutting off the tap in 1977.
6:38am: David Pope dabbles in the ACT budget...
6:34am: It's the morning after budget, and we've had a bit more of a chance to dig through the papers now.
Assembly reporter Peter Jean has all the details in his wrap up here. But the main points are, your rates are going to go up (probably by about 10 per cent) but you'll pay less stamp duty if you move. It's part of the government's move to eventually phase out stamp duty altogether, and spread the revenue load over all the community rather than just those who are moving homes. Whether you think that is a good idea likely depends on how often you move.
The budget nerds can download a pdf map of all the infrastructure projects. Or if you're really enthusiastic, you can read through all of Andrew Barr's speech here.
