TWO missed penalties and a red card to Canberra FC's James Field proved decisive as Woden Valley came from a goal down at half-time to upset the competition leaders 4-1 in Saturday's National Premier League match at Woden Park.

The victory was capped off with a stunning free kick from Woden Valley's American striker Derek Oelmann that saw him finish with a hat-trick.

''As long as the team is winning, that's what matters to me,'' said Oelmann after the match. ''If it means I have to score a few goals I'll do that, but being in the locker room with these guys, it's a lot of fun right now.''

Canberra FC dominated possession early on and deservedly took the lead when Nathan Evans headed in at the back post. Field's second yellow left the visitors a man down and after Alex Oloriegbe's penalty was saved by Woden's Evan Alexandrow-Ridley the score was 1-0 at half-time.

Former Canberra FC player Stephen Lee deflected a shot from outside the area past goalkeeper Adam Perakovic to level the scores and the visitors missed their second penalty shortly after when Ryan Keir's shot blasted against the crossbar.

Oelmann made them pay when he was left to easily nod in after a horror clearance and he soon made it 3-1 when he was on hand to tap in Regan Walsh's low-driven free kick. Woden were always in control and Oelmann's late free kick sealed the emphatic upset.

''It feels really good,'' Oelmann said. ''We felt like we've been playing well lately so to come out here and win on our home pitch, it definitely feels good.''

In Sunday's matches, second placed Canberra Olympic travel to Tuggeranong United while Cooma Tigers host Monaro and AIS play bottom placed Canberra City.
