The prospect of the Labor Party faring poorly in the September federal election has prompted at least two Labor MPs to pack up their Parliament House offices in anticipation of losing their seats, according to The Australian Financial Review.
Victorian MP Alan Griffin and south-western Sydney MP Daryl Melham have reportedly packed up their Canberra offices as the current session of Parliament heads into its final two weeks before rising ahead of the election.
Mr Griffin has held his seat since 1996 and Mr Melham since 1990, but both face long odds of re-election.
Mr Melham told the AFR that he had packed up his office not because he was conceding defeat, but rather as a contingency to avoid having to return to Canberra if he does not win the election.
The latest polls have shown Labor having increasingly long odds of winning re-election in September, while Treasurer Wayne Swan and Trade Minister Craig Emerson have denied reports that internal Labor polling has predicted a wipeout for the party in Queensland.
