Canberra Close Up - David Pope - ABC Local

David Pope joined Alex Sloan on 666 Afternoons to share some stories about himself that even his daughter (listening on) didn't know about.

"There was one year where Katy Gallagher was treasurer and I drew this huge caricature of her on the front page after a budget. Canberra being Canberra - a small place - I heard at school through various networks that so garish was the portrait, that it made Katy's youngest son cry," he said.

Prior to stepping into the giant shoes of Geoff Pryor at the Canberra times in 2008, Pope drew political cartoons for the Sun Herald and has received seven Stanley Awards for his illustrations.

"In this town if you're a cartoonist, the first thing people will say is 'How good's Geoff Pryor?'" Pope told Alex as he praised his predecessor.

Pope is unrelentingly humble and when complemented on his talents said, "I'm a firm believer that with enough practice you can do anything."

"The essential thing about cartoons is the political ideas," he said.

Budding photographer

During Canberra Close Up, the talented cartoonist told Alex he spends his spare time bushwalking and photographing insects.

"I like trying to understand the bugs that eat the vegetables," he joked.

When Alex mentioned the Skywhale and what a gift it has been to Pope's cartoons, he threw his hands in the air shouting "Yes! ...what a metaphor... as a cartoonist... brilliant."

"If I haven't drawn you as Skywhale yet, be patient... I'll get round to it."
