More than 500 drivers were caught speeding on Canberra’s roads throughout April, more than 50 of which were caught out in school zones.

ACT Policing issued 521 traffic infringement notices and 198 cautions throughout the month, Traffic Operations Officer-in-Charge Sergeant Rod Anderson said.

“If you’re speeding, what may have been a minor collision if you were sticking to the speed limit could end up being much more serious,” he said.

“Driver who wilfully speed [are] gambling with their own lives, the loves of other drivers and passengers, and the lives of children, pedestrians and cyclists.”

He said speeding drivers can face fines ranging from $167 and the loss of one demerit point to $1800 and loss of six demerit points.

Amongst the drivers caught in Canberra throughout April, 246 were detected travelling more than 15km/hr but less than 30km/hr over the speed limit.
