JENNY Macklin will use federal powers to demand the Northern Territory government send "assessors" into certain Alice Springs drinking venues to decide whether their licensing and business practices are causing harm to the community, and if they are, what changes should be made, in a bid to reduce alcohol-related crime.
In a dramatic intervention on the day Julia Gillard used the nation's fifth Closing the Gap report to warn that actions of the Queensland and Northern Territory governments were allowing the "rivers of grog" back into dysfunctional Aboriginal communities, the Indigenous Affairs Minister has written to Territory Chief Minister Terry Mills declaring she will now begin the audit.
