Three killed within minutes as Christmas road toll spikes - Sydney Morning Herald

Three people have been killed within minutes in two separate traffic accidents early on Wednesday morning, in a tragic start to Boxing Day on NSW roads.

Two people died when a four-wheel-drive rolled on the Hume Highway shortly before 7am near Holbrook in the state's south-east, blocking all the highway's southbound lanes.

A police spokesman said there was also a number of people injured in the accident, but details were still being confirmed.

A Transport Management Centre spokesman warned holiday motorists there were major traffic diversions in place.

Southbound motorists are being diverted onto the Sturt Highway via Wagga Wagga, then the Olympic Highway to Henty and Culcairn continuing back to the Hume Highway north of Albury.

Northbound lanes of the Hume Highway remain open and unaffected.

The highway is expected to remain closed for several hours as police investigate the cause of the accident.

Motorists travelling southbound are being urged to exercise caution and allow additional travel time.

In the second incident, police said a man died in a two-car collision at Marsden Park in Sydney's north-west on Wednesday morning, with the accident reported at 6.49am.

The driver of the other car was taken to hospital suffering from shock.

Yesterday, a nine-year-old boy was killed and a 12-year-old boy was seriously injured after the trail-bike they were riding hit a tree on a paddock in a property in central west NSW. Neither boy was wearing a helmet at the time.

NSW's first holiday period fatality was a 79-year-old woman in a car crash at Mount Ousley, south of Sydney, just after 1pm on Sunday.

The latest NSW fatalities bring the national Christmas holiday road toll to 13.

Double demerit points will be in place until 11.59pm on Tuesday, January 1, for speeding, seatbelt and helmet offences.
