All five Boxing Day fatalities in NSW - Sky News Australia

Road toll hits 16 following NSW deaths

Three fatalities from two NSW Boxing Day road smashes that occurred just minutes apart have lifted the national holiday road toll to 16.

Just before 6.50am (AEDT) on Wednesday, a two-car smash at Marsden Park, in Sydney's northwest, left one man dead while the other car's driver was taken to hospital suffering shock.

In another smash, shortly before 7am (AEDT), a woman and a man died at the scene when the four-wheel drive vehicle in which they were passengers rolled on the Hume Highway about six kilometres north of Holbrook, in NSW's south.

The car's driver and other passengers were also hurt, with one flown to a Melbourne hospital suffering serious injuries.

Another two men died in separate accidents in New South Wales, after their cars hit trees.

Six people have now died in New South Wales over the holiday period, taking to 16 the number of people killed in road accidents across Australia.

A sedan left the road on Murray Street at Abernethy and ran into a tree about 2.30pm (AEDT).

Police say the driver, whose age isn't known, was found by a passing motorist and later died at the scene.

It followed a similar accident at 1.45pm at Hargreaves, in the state's central west.

The driver was taken to hospital while emergency services worked for some time to free the passenger, who suffered fatal injuries.

Queensland's first holiday road death came after a sedan veered off the Bruce Highway on the state's east coast and rolled at about 3.15am (AEST) on Wednesday, killing its male driver, the car's sole occupant.

Victoria has had the most deaths since the holiday toll began on Sunday with five, with police on Wednesday saying they expect to lay charges over a Christmas Day collision that saw a sedan slam into a taxi that had been stopped at traffic lights in Geelong, killing the male cabbie.

There have been four deaths in NSW, while in one of South Australia's two fatalities a motorist died when his car left the road and caught fire at Millicent, southeast of Adelaide, on Christmas Day.

Tasmania and Western Australia have each recorded one death.

The national road toll period runs from 0001 December 23, 2012, until 2359 January 3, 2013, local times, in line with the Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Board.
