Just let us go home - The Australian

WE have been talking for over an hour when the phone line to Dubai suddenly falls silent. Angela Joyce has gone mute as she ponders how to put into words what has happened to the man she loves. "He's not the guy I married," she says finally. "I mean Matt is still Matt. But he's broken. His career, his reputation, his livelihood. These are things that cut a man to the bone."

A day later, the phone rings again. This time Matthew Joyce, 47, is on the line. It has taken this father-of-three almost four years to make this phone call. He has not spoken to a journalist since he was thrown into solitary confinement in Dubai in early 2009 on bribery charges, forever changing his life and that of his young family. Now, as he lives under house arrest and faces the prospect of further jail, this one-time Victorian property developer is ready to break his silence on Australia's most remarkable consular case.
