Canberra Raiders prop David Shillington is set to miss the season-opener against North Queensland on March 8, with scans on a rib cartilage injury on Monday expected to confirm he'll be sidelined for two to four weeks.

Shillington suffered the injury midway through the first half of Canberra's final trial against Newcastle in Tamworth on Saturday night.

It is a massive blow ahead of a huge round one test in Townsville against the Cowboys, who boast Australian starting props Matt Scott and James Tamou in their line-up.

"From what I'm hearing it's a two to four week injury, we're waiting to see results from scans today,'' Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said.

"It's a big loss. David's an experienced player who's had a good off season.''

Shillington is Canberra's only injury concern in an otherwise incident-free build up to round one.

"So far we've been very fortunate with our injuries,'' Stuart said.

"We're in pretty good shape, apart from David.''

Shillington's unavailability may solve a potential front row selection headache for Stuart, with Brett White, Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, Dane Tilse and Paul Vaughan also vying for spots.
