The result of the month-long Federal Labor leadership contest between Bill Shorten and Anthony Albanese will be announced in Canberra this afternoon.
Labor officials have spent the weekend counting the votes of thousands of rank and file party members from across the country.
It is the first time they have been given a direct say in the ALP leadership.
The result of that ballot will be equally weighed against the caucus vote to work out whether Mr Albanese or Mr Shorten will become the new Labor leader.
Party insiders say the result is too close to call.
Mr Shorten is understood to have won the backing of a majority of his Caucus colleagues but party insiders have indicated Mr Albanese is ahead in the broader membership count.
The overall result will be announced to the Caucus at a special meeting in Parliament House this afternoon.
