THE Canberra Raiders have resisted the temptation to name star five-eighth Terry Campese in a strong 24-man squad for their NRL trial against Melbourne on Friday.

Former NSW Origin star Campese, who has only notched a handful of appearances in the last two seasons due to two serious knee injuries and a serious groin injury, was left out on the advice of team doctors.

There are suggestions Campese won’t be ready for round one and may even return through the NSW Cup or off the NRL bench.

Campese aside, the Raiders have named a strong team that features 16 players with NRL experience, including hot shots Josh Dugan, Jarrod Croker, Dane Tilse and Josh Papalii.

Shaun Fensom is a late withdrawal after he sustained a minor ankle injury at training last week, while Brett White, Tom Learoyd-Lahrs and Glen Buttriss are also unavailable through injury.

Given David Shillington, Reece Robinson, Blake Ferguson, Joel Thompson, Jack Wighton and new recruit Jake Foster will play the NRL All Stars game on Saturday night, all of Canberra’s fit NRL players are set for game time this weekend.

Key recruit Joel Edwards, signed from the Knights, will make his debut for the club.
