THE Australian man killed in a tourist bus crash in Bolivia has been named as Kurt Steel, a media advisor to ACT Treasurer Andrew Barr.



Steel’s devastated family in Canberra released a statement thanking people for their support.


“Our thoughts are also with other families with relatives involved,” the statement said.


“We love you Kurt and we’ll miss you forever.”


Steel’s friends and colleagues took to Twitter to pay tribute to Steel, who was described as one of ACT Labor’s “bright young stars”.


Steel’s older brother Chris tweeted a thank you for the messages of support, saying his family was devastated by their loss.


Bolivian police said the bus was returning to La Paz from the Salar de Uyuni salt flats on Saturday when it ran off the highway and crashed, killing ten people.


Police Capt. Gonzalo Carrasco said that another 24 people, most of them foreigners, were injured and being treated in hospitals in Oruro, the closest big city.


The fatal Bolivian victims included the bus driver.


Carrasco said the injured included Germans, Italians, Swiss, Canadians, Chileans, Peruvians and an Indian.


He said the cause of the accident was under investigation.
