Wright's turn corners Norths in Canberra cricket - Sydney Morning Herald

WESTON CREEK MOLONGLO may have unearthed a star of the future in 16-year-old leg-spinner Mac Wright after he tore through North Canberra Gungahlin.

Wright (4-37) and paceman Ben Scott (4-47) claimed four wickets each as Weston Creek sealed first-innings points on the opening day of its Douglas Cup match at Stirling Oval on Saturday.

Norths were bundled out for 162, with Weston Creek to resume at 3-164 with debutant Shae Darcy 68 not out alongside veteran Cade Brown (unbeaten on 56).

Wright claimed the key wicket of Norths' top-scorer Tim Coggan, bowling him around his legs for 64.

Weston Creek batsman Adam Rhynehart said he believed Wright was destined for big things.

''The way he can flight the ball and his variations at such a young age are extremely impressive,'' Rhynehart said.

''I've seen quite a few times between overs the batters making comments about how good he's going.

''The way he bowled out Coggan when he decided to mix it up by going around the wicket, that showed not only does he have the skills, but he's got the mental ability to know his game inside and out.''

Darcy combined with Brown - the second-leading run-scorer in Cricket ACT history - to put Weston Creek in the box seat for an outright victory.

Meanwhile, defending champion Wests/UC will resume next weekend on 4-71, needing another 154 runs to claim first-innings points in its match with ANU at ANU North Oval.

ANU was in complete control at 2-158 before the hosts lost seven quick wickets for just 21 runs.

A 45-run stand for the final wicket boosted the total to 224, but it was little consolation for ANU captain Mark Bennett.

''We were a bit disappointed to be in quite a strong position at 2-150-odd and then crumble, so we needed to really fire with the ball, which we did,'' said Bennett, who top-scored with 73.

Brendan Duffy took 4-51 to bring Wests/UC back into the contest, ANU paceman Nick Prell responding with 3-19 courtesy of an impressive spell of swing bowling.

At Chisholm Oval, Eastlake will resume at 3-92 chasing Tuggeranong's first innings of 169.

Tim Floros top-scored for Tuggeranong with 45, while Eastlake seamer Danushka Wijesundara finished with figures of 3-31.

A superb all-round performance from Queanbeyan captain Blake Dean has delivered his side first-innings points against Ginninderra at Freebody Oval.

Dean took 4-4 as Ginninderra was dismissed for a meagre 110 before he made 57 with the bat as Queanbeyan finished the day at 2-116.
