Qantas has unveiled the first of five upgraded aircraft for the busy Canberra route, featuring an all-new business class aimed at corporate clients and government MPs and officials.

QantasLink executive manager John Gissing said the renovated Boeing 717 aircraft would be used on selected Canberra-Brisbane, Canberra-Sydney and Canberra-Melbourne flights.

''This is a wonderful product for our corporate customers and our government customers,'' he told reporters in Canberra on Friday.

Qantas had started flying the aircraft on Tuesday.

Mr Gissing said Qantas provided more services in and out of Canberra than any other operator.

On Canberra routes, its main competitor is Virgin, now at the centre of a row after Qantas boss Alan Joyce said Virgin's foreign backing allowed it to run at a loss at the expense of Qantas.

Mr Gissing said each market where Qantas operated had its tensions and challenges.

This is the first time Qantas has operated two-class aircraft on Canberra routes.

The upgraded aircraft features 12 business class and 98 economy class seats.

Business class passengers have leather-lined seats, and can watch movies streamed to Qantas-supplied iPads. AAP
