HARVEY WEINSTEIN might have let us down, but the queen of horror came through for Canberra on Saturday.

Linda Blair, star of the 1973 classic The Exorcist, visited the ACT for the first time on Saturday when she arrived to host a screening of the 40-year-old movie that made her famous.

Only marginally slowed down by a recent double hernia surgery, the animal welfare campaigner met fans at Impact Comics in Civic before helping to launch horror film festival Monster Fest.

Best known for her Golden Globe-winning role as Regan, a child possessed by a demon that causes frightening behavioural changes, including taunting a priest trying to help her, Blair has racked up more than 60 acting credits, including the spoof films Repossessed and The Blair Bitch Project starring Linda Blair.

Despite the Christian themes in The Exorcist, Blair said she did not subscribe to any particular faith and instead described herself as spiritual and accepting of all religions.

She encourages audiences to look at the film with a new perspective - as a theological thriller with deep messages about faith - and she believes scary films these days are in good hands.

''I think there's some remarkable filmmakers, although some are a little graphic,'' Blair said.

''Quentin Tarantino can make something violent and horrific and make you laugh.''

■ The 12-hour film festival plays at Canberra Institute of Technology's Woden campus from 3pm on Saturday, November 30, to 3am Sunday.

Fans will have the opportunity to see the latest cult films from around the world, including Big Ass Spider, Kiss of the Damned, Hatchet III and Anti-Social.
