Canberra outgun Sydney in ABL series - Ninemsn

Defending Australian Baseball League (ABL) champions Canberra have defeated Sydney 2-1 in their series on the road to sit second on the ladder.

The Blue Sox drew first blood thanks to a standout effort from Trent Oeltjen.

The former Arizona Diamondbacks and LA Dodgers player hit a homer, a triple and had three RBIs as the Blue Sox won game one 5-2.

But the Cavalry (5-2, 2nd place) bounced back in game two, with Jeremy Barnes smashing a double in the fifth inning that would drive in three runs and give Canberra a commanding lead that set up a 6-1 triumph.

Game three was a thriller, tied at 2-2 in the top of the ninth when Canberra shortstop Casey Frawley belted a double that scored two runs to give the Cavalry a hard-fought 4-2 win.

In the second round's other series, Perth (4-4, 4th place) defeated Adelaide (2-6, 5th place) on the road 3-1.

Heat pitcher, former San Diego Padre Mike Ekstrom, struck out nine Bite batters in Perth's 6-1 win in game one.

In the Heat's 8-1 victory in game two, Colorado Rockies import Joey Wong ripped four big hits and former New York Yankee Anthony Claggett kept the Bite's bats quiet again, earning his first win of the season.

Pitching would be a determining factor again in game three but, this time, it was the Bite claiming victory, 2-0, thanks to a solid outing from Kyle Bruggemann who gave up only two hits and pitched a complete-game shutout.

The Heat batters bounced back to earn an efficient eight runs off nine hits in their 8-2 win over Adelaide to wrap up the series.

The Brisbane Bandits (3-1, 1st place) and Melbourne Aces (1-3, 6th place) had bye weeks and will host the Sydney Blue Sox and Adelaide Bite, respectively, in round three.
