Canberra man pleads not guilty to Meche nightclub assault - The Canberra Times

A Canberra man will fight allegations that he assaulted a patron of a Civic nightclub earlier this year, leaving him unconscious.

Saed Harmouche, 23, appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday morning, charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Police allege he assaulted a 27-year-old man inside Canberra's Meche nightclub on Northbourne Avenue in July.

Police said in a statement that they arrived at the nightclub about 3.40am on Sunday, July 21.

They allege a man was found unconscious inside the venue.

Paramedics were called, and took the alleged victim to Canberra Hospital, according to police.

"After a lengthy investigation by members from ACT Policing Criminal Investigations Detectives, a 23-year-old man was arrested for assaulting the 27-year-old victim," police said.

Harmouche entered a plea of not guilty to the charge during a brief appearance in court on Friday.

He also applied to vary his bail, removing a condition that required him to regularly report to police.

Harmouche has no prior record, the court heard, and was born and raised in Canberra.

Magistrate Peter Dingwall said it was not appropriate to force Harmouche to report to police, simply because the charge was serious.

He said forcing alleged offenders to report was only needed if they were unlikely to answer their bail.

The court has ordered him not to contact a long list of witnesses.

The matter will be back before court in February.
