Outcry over closure of Canberra women's support centre - Yahoo!7 News

The ACT Government is facing a backlash over its decision to close a women's support service in Canberra's CBD.

The centre offers support groups for women facing domestic violence and divorce, as well as free personal development courses and weekly information sessions.

The Government is moving those services to suburban locations in Tuggeranong and Belconnen.

There has been outcry from academics, service provides and lobby groups concerned some women will miss out on much needed help.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher concedes the changes are due to a tight Territory budget.

"They were spending $80,000 on the lease of that shopfront. They have to look at some of these costs," she said.

She says the Government is looking at similar ways to find savings in other areas.

"Just because it's existed in Civic for 35 years, just because it's always been the way it is, doesn't mean it can either continue or that it's the best way for that to continue," she said.

"It's probably the start of a number of discussions we'll have across Government about this."
