Canberra team takes honours in women's fours - The Canberra Times

''We were lucky, extremely lucky.'' That's how Robyn Moxon viewed her team's win in the ACT women's fours final on Sunday.

Her Canberra team of Jimmie Ogle, Mina Bannerman and Lois Waters stormed home to pinch a 26-25 win at Queanbeyan RSL.

Trailing 23-15 with just three ends to play, they picked up a seven - courtesy of a Moxon drive that sent their Canberra City opponents' bowls scattering - and then a four to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Moxon said the City foursome of Gill Lumsden, Sue Lalor, Hillary Merritt and Lexie Webster played extremely well and would be a ''force to be reckoned with'' in coming years.

''We were lucky, extremely lucky three times,'' Moxon said of the win. I hit the bowl I was aiming for .. and bowls sprayed everywhere … and it ended up that we got seven shots. I guess I got lucky.''

Three of the four Canberra women have won the ACT women's fours together before, with Bannerman the recent inclusion in the team. Ogle and Moxon used to play tennis together before joining forces on the bowling green.

It wasn't just in the final that the foursome had a narrow win. They produced a few big ends in their semi-final as well and only narrowly won their second-round match.

It's a date

The national senior sides championships will finally become part of Bowls Australia's official calendar of events.

Both the ACT men's and women's managed two wins apiece at the champs, held in Geelong in miserable conditions last week.

The men beat South Australia and Northern Territory, while the women continued the ACT's recent good form against powerhouse Queensland and beat Tasmania as well.

Bowls Australia had a meeting of all the states' head honchos, including Bowls ACT president Kevin Antoine, on Tuesday.

They discussed their inclusion of the senior sides champs into the calendar, as well as lawn bowls' recent push to increase participation across Australia.

The ACT clubs had a statewide open day recently, with varying success.

''Some clubs had 30 people turn up, some had one. I really think it comes down to us doing it better next time,'' he said.
