Economists say Canberra motorists could be in for some relief at the petrol pump, after the capital’s average petrol price stayed effectively steady in the past week.

Prices dropped just 0.1c to 156.5c per litre and remain well above the national average of 151.0c in the week to Sunday.

Analysis by Commsec economists found the gap between wholesale and gross retail prices is at the near record point of 14c per litre, as Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne recorded increases in prices.

CommSec chief economist Craig James said motorists should shop around for the best price.

“The good news for motorists is that the Aussie dollar is strong, keeping prices down at the petrol pump,” he said.

“The Singapore gasoline price stands at five-month lows in Australian dollar terms.”

Last month, ACT motorists paid an average of 157.9c per litre for unleaded fuel.
