World music/jazz band Takadimi will bring their unique sound to The Front at Lyneham on Monday night.

FRIDAY

10PM | Peking Duk

Canberra-bred electro experts Peking Duk are in high demand across the country with appearances at all the big festivals and an upcoming support slot for international superstars the Bloody Beetroots, but have found the time to give their home town a spin beforehand. The on-the-rise duo recently placed sixth in the highly competitive In the Mix DJ awards and have hit all the right notes with recent hits I Love To Rap and The Way You Are.

♦ Trinity Bar, Dickson. 18+. Tickets $15 before 10pm (doors open at 8pm)

6PM | Smells Like Centenary Spirit

Canberra’s big birthday band comp moves into its third and final heat as seven up-and-coming groups of hopefuls battle it out to make the grand final on November 15. This week’s contestants are the Steptones, Venom Inside, Fires in July, Re-Image, the Institute, Strange Tourist and Behind the Silhouettes.

♦ Woden CIT. Free entry. All ages.

8PM | CMC 5th birthday party

Canberra Musicians Club has been representing the territory’s musical artists for five years now and it’s time to celebrate all that they’ve done. In true CMC style, it’s going to be a full-on non-stop groove-filled over-hyphenated extravaganza with funk-fuelled eight-piece Zoopagoo along with Spindrift Saga, Beth’n’Ben, DJ Bat Guano and DJ Degg. Free for CMC members so join up and enjoy the benefits.

♦ Polish Club, Turner. Licensed venue. Tickets $15/$13 at the door (free for CMC members)

SATURDAY

1.30pm | TJ James

If you have been around Canberra for a while, you’ve probably already seen TJ James performing. Whether it was busking outside the Woden shopping centre or playing at the Hellenic Club or any number of markets around town you’ve most likely heard James’ keyboard and vocals. He will be launching his album with support from Amber Nichols. Twenty per cent of the ticket price goes to the Cerebral Palsey Alliance.

♦ Belconnen Arts Centre. All ages. Tickets $15 at the door.

8PM | Electric Eighties

Some old Canberra favourites are getting back together for a big celebration of local music history. Formed by three former Canberrans in 1986, the Sydney band Crow toured with the likes of Jeff Buckley, Nirvana and Sonic Youth. They will be joined by other Canberra bands from that era, including the Young Docteurs (pictured), Hell Yes and the Vacant Lot for a party that spans two stages and also features old-school DJs LD Glove and Goldfinger.

♦ The Croatian Club, Turner. Licensed venue. Tickets $30/$25 from trybooking.com/dkas

THE WEEK AHEAD

Monday, 6PM | Takadimi

World/jazz-music quintet Takadimi met at university in Sydney but made their debut performance in Canberra back in 2009 at the National Folk Festival, so we can claim them as our own whenever they come to town. All highly skilled musicians, this group of artists mix together a mess of styles from around the world into one cohesive and entertaining package that is beautifully performed jazz.

♦ The Front, Lyneham. All ages. Tickets $15/$10 at the door.

Thursday, 8PM | The Basics

Not your ordinary rock‘n’roll band, the Basics this year returned from a three-year break with two albums, Ingredients and Leftovers. They also came back with a Grammy-award-winning international chart-topping bona fide superstar behind the drum kit. Since their last tour, Wally de Backer (aka Gotye) has conquered the world but is back, sticks in hand, with his bandmates as the Basics try to push their fun-filled brand of rock’n’roll to the masses.

♦ Transit Bar, Civic. 18+. Tickets $20 + bf from moshtix.com.au

Thursday, 8PM | Regurgitator

Australian alt-rock legends Regurgitator aren’t the kind of band that usually does the expected but what you can expect is a quality performance from possibly the hardest working artists in the country. On their third tour in the past year, (which included hitting the capital for Groovin’ the Moo back in May) they come to Canberra right in the middle of a tour in support of their latest album, Dirty Pop Fantasy. Support comes from Canberra punk trio Super Best Friends, who are on a high after their viral success with Round and Round.

♦ Zierholz UC, Belconnen. 18+. Tickets $39.80 from oztix.com.au
