Olympian Martin Dent has taken out the inaugural 14 kilometre Canberra Times fun run after a last minute decision to enter the race.

The marathon runner had been recovering from the recent World Athletics Championships in Moscow – where he finished 23rd - and decided on Saturday that he felt like a bit of a run.

He crossed the line first in 44:47, followed by Lindsay Wall in 46:28 and then Michael Chapman in 46:35.

Triathlete Rhiannon Snipe was the first female finisher of the 14 kilometre run with a time of 52:15.

Angela Bateup came second in 53:11 and Hanny Allston crossed in 53:39.

About 5800 people raced along Canberra roads for the 5, 10 or 14 kilometre fun runs and helped raise almost $97,000 for 195 different charities.

Participants were given a choice this year to run in an extended route that lapped around Parliament House and Old Parliament House.

More than 1500 people entered to run the new distance.

Dent said he had enjoyed the track and hadn’t had to push himself too hard.

“It went pretty well, I didn’t have to bury myself in the race to get the win, it was about marathon pace for me,” he said.

The Olympian shared the starting line with superhero the Flash, who said he was feeling pretty fresh after the race.

“I didn’t feel a thing, I did the 14km, then I came back and did the 10km, and then I did the 5km,” Barry Allen aka Chris Wilson said.

He said he always participated in the fun run – last year he was batman – and had been surprised with the popularity of the new route.

The winner of the 5 kilometre run also made a last minute decision to enter the event.

Sydney’s Marcus Leopoldo, who is visiting Canberra, entered to get to know some of the city on his trip.

He ran in a time of 18.29 and Hannah Legge-Wilkinson came first for the women in 21:00.

The winners of the 10 kilometre event were Chris Hamer in 30:04 and Natalie Archer in 35:40.
