Drivers in Canberra's CBD had to contend with a large road scraper which was stolen from a Majura Parkway worksite at lunchtime.

Police received several calls from the public around 12:30pm about a large piece of earth-moving equipment being driven erratically along the roadway and the median strip on Northbourne Avenue.

The large vehicle allegedly drove through several red lights along the busy road before heading over Commonwealth Avenue bridge.

The 20-minute joy ride ended on Deakin High School oval where the grass sports field was damaged.

A 23-year-old Deakin man has been taken to the Canberra Hospital for tests.

He is expected to be charged with several traffic and property damage offences.
