Lefties in Canberra - The Australian

GREG Melleuish is spot-on when he says that election results show that the Labor-biased public service that rules Canberra is out of step with the rest of Australia ("Sir Humphrey is a Lefty", 16/9).

Having recently relocated to a working-class suburb in Melbourne after many years in Canberra, I have noted that people in Melbourne do not have the time to think about the public service as a political force because they are too busy trying to make a dollar to keep their heads above water.

They do not realise the extent of the influence of the national capital's fourth arm of government.

However, they do realise that Canberra, with its highest median house prices, highest salaries per head of population and its superior public facilities, is a privileged la-la land disconnected from the struggletown circumstances of the other states.
