A COUPLE of vintage caravans restored by Wynyard High School students will head to Canberra next month.
Museum of the Long Weekend is an abstract museum investigating national identity through holiday and leisure.
The event occurs next month and about 100 vintage caravans will travel from all over the country.
This year, Wynyard High School students Jake Murray, 16, and Will Keen, 15, spent one day a week working on restoring two 1950s caravans under the tutelage of Big hART mentor Chris Symonds.
"What I am doing is passing on practical skills for the boys," Mr Symonds said.
"They help me as much as I help them though.
"But it gets them into a one-on-one environment where they will be less disrupted by others."
What started as a mere opportunity to get out of class for the boys, ended up being a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Both Will and Jake were proud with how the caravans had turned out and each learned something different from the experience.
Jake was glad to have finally learned to solder properly, where Will said restoring caravans with Jake and Mr Symonds taught him how to work with others.
Will enjoyed learning from Mr Symonds.
"You're probably going to do a lot of things you've never done before," Will said.
