Canberra Raiders sack Blake Ferguson - ABC Online

Updated September 06, 2013 12:25:19

The Canberra Raiders board has sacked centre Blake Ferguson following a series of indiscretions.

Ferguson, who had two years to run on his contract, did not front this morning's board meeting which lasted an hour at Canberra Stadium.

The Raiders will make an official announcement this afternoon.

The club had made it clear he needed to attend the board meeting if his career at the club was to be saved.

Ferguson had not be seen at the Raiders for almost two weeks and had been suspended by the club without pay.

The talented outside back, who represented New South Wales in State of Origin I this year, has been involved in a number of off-field indiscretions during his time at the Raiders.

The most serious of which is an alleged indecent assault on a young woman the night before he was due to go into a Blues training camp for Origin II in June.

Ferguson did not attend Waverley court last Tuesday and the case will be heard at Sutherland court next Tuesday.

He is also scheduled to appear in Moss Vale local court on October 21 to answer a charge of speeding and driving while his licence was suspended.

Earlier in the year he and former Raiders team-mate Josh Dugan breached club policy when they were photographed drinking while injured.

Dugan was sacked after the incident followed previous indiscretions by him. Ferguson was fined $10,000.

After Dugan later picked up a new contract with St George Illawarra, Raiders fans are calling for Ferguson to be deregistered by the NRL.

Senior Raiders player Shaun Berrigan says the sacking of Ferguson is the best thing for the club.

“Blake’s been nothing but dramas this year for the club,” he said.

“I’m sure the club will move on. No player is bigger than the team. The team is the most important thing.”

More to follow.
