7:13am: The ACT bushfire season officially starts today. And a warm, wet winter has increased concerns for firefighters as they face an increased fuel load throughout the capital region this bushfire season.
Minister for Police and Emergency Services Simon Corbell has reminded Canberrans to Prepare, Act, Survive with summer just around the corner.
“Forecast indicators at the moment point to a wetter than average spring and a dry hot summer period for the ACT. This is expected to bring a large amount of grass growth, which could present a problem over summer for grassland fires if a drying trend eventuates,” Mr Corbell said.
“This summer the ACT remains prepared for bushfire. ACT Fire & Rescue (ACTF&R) and the ACT Rural Fire Service (ACTRFS) have resources and personnel in place to protect the community.”
The bushfire season ends on March 31. You can download a bushfire survival plan from the ESA website.

7:04am: It’s the first day of October – and it’s also the first day of Ocsober.
Ocsober is the national campaign encouraging Aussies to put down their drinks for one month and fundraise in support of children.
It’s not too late to register – head to www.ocsober.com.au and join thousands of Australians losing the booze this month.
6:58am: Things are getting serious over in the US over Obamacare - so much so that government could grind to a halt. Obama is due to speak to the media shortly.
The US Senate has swiftly rejected a House measure to delay President Barack Obama's health care law as part of a federal funding bill, pushing the government ever-closer to a shutdown.
Congress now has less than 10 hours to resolve a bitter impasse over a temporary spending bill before many federal agencies shut their doors, forcing hundreds of thousands of federal employees to stay home.
6:55am Ross Peake: The race for the ACT's second Senate seat has been over for a few days now, since the Greens' Simon Sheikh conceded defeat in the face of the lead gained by Liberal candidate Zed Seselja.
It's been a tedious business to find the winner after the September 7 election, as staff at the Australian Electoral Commission had to enter data from tens of thousands of under-the-line votes into the computer.
This morning the computer will distribute preferences and the winner will be formally declared. That ceremony will take place in Kings Hall at Old Parliament House , which proved wildly popular when used at this election as a polling booth for the first time.
Mr Seselja will be formally declared the winner today and will be sworn in when Parliament resumes in a few weeks.

6:48am: I feel like weather warnings are following my morning blogs... There's another one out today.
It was a balmy night, and is a very warm morning by Canberra standards - it dipped to a low of 8.7C at 1am, but has already hit 17C for the morning so far, with a little bit of sunshine and a fair bit of cloud.
And the wind. The wind has already picked up - gusts above 40km/h so far both at the airport and in Tuggeranong. It's ahead of a "vigorous" cold front, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, which will bring gale force winds and blizzard conditions.
In the ACT winds are expected to pick up to 60km/h with gusts over 100km/h, while up on the mountains it could get as strong as 130km/h. Thredbo has already seen a gust of 130km/h overnight.
Along with the blustery conditions, rain will develop in the late morning, but will mostly clear by the evening. The Bureau predicts up to 6 millimetres for the day.
6:34am: With sunrise so early these days, it takes a bit of dedication to be up in time to enjoy it. So thank goodness for those kind folk with smartphones who capture it for all to see.
Here's a sunrise catch-up for you from Jeremy Lasek:
