Canberra drivers shell out $9m in parking fines - ABC Online

More than 100,000 parking tickets were issued across Canberra last financial year, netting the ACT Government more than $9 million.

The Justice and Community Safety (JACS) Directorate annual report shows 100,099 fines were issued to drivers in 2012-13.

But over the year, nearly 12,500 drivers attempted to get out of paying the fine.

As a result, nearly 7,000 parking tickets were eventually withdrawn.

Motorists also paid out more than $12 million to parking machines and parking meters over the year, and another $2.5 million for parking labels.

But there were more than 16,000 complaints received over ticket machine and parking meter faults.

The Government is already looking at parking operation improvements after a critical Auditor-General's report earlier this year.
