Blinded soldier walking from Canberra to Sydney - SBS

An Australian soldier blinded in Iraq is walking from Canberra to Sydney to raise money and awareness about fellow soldiers wounded in battle.

Liam Haven, who lost his sight in 2008 during a roadside bomb blast in Iraq, will cover more than 350 kilometres on his walk, called the "One-Foot-Forward March".

He said he hoped to send a message to others.

"There's a lot that people can do for each other and there's a lot that people don't do, and all it takes is one person to make a statement before people realise they can get up and do something as well. "

Father Craig Haven said despite the enormity of his son's journey, his goal was simple.

"I don't think he set out to be anything special; he's just doing what he can to help his mates," Mr Haven said.

Liam took the first steps of his journey with former Prime Minister John Howard, who made the original decision to send troops to Iraq.

Mr Howard said the moment had been a special one.

"As prime minister at the time these military commitments were made, I feel a special connection and, I suppose, a special responsibility."

All money raised from the walk will be split equally between organisations Soldier On and Guide Dogs Victoria.
