Justin Monfries jailed for Canberra Hospital hit and run - Yahoo!7 News

The man who killed a woman in a hit and run accident outside Canberra Hospital has been sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison.

Justin Monfries killed Linda Cox, 38, and seriously injured Ashlee Bumpus, 26, when he sped through a red light in a stolen car on Yamba Drive in Woden in May last year.

The women were crossing the road after finishing work at the Canberra Hospital.

Earlier this year the 25-year-old pleaded guilty to three charges including culpable driving causing death, culpable driving causing grievous bodily harm and stealing a car.

Today in the ACT Supreme Court he was sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison.

He will not be eligible for parole until 2022.

During a sentencing hearing earlier this month,

Monfries had been drinking heavily before he stole a car, crashed into another car and drove off.

Witnesses called police who eventually spotted Monfries driving the damaged car.

They turned on their car lights and sirens and when Monfries noticed he fled, running two red lights near the Canberra Hospital where he hit the two hospital workers.

Monfries continued driving until he hit the back of another car, and then ran away on foot.

Police caught him a short time later.

A pre-sentence report to the court suggested Monfries suffers aspergers, epilepsy and a chromosomal disorder.

The report also noted he had given an unreliable account, distancing himself from culpability.

His lawyers argued that should be a mitigating factor but the crown argued Monfries is a danger to the community.
