Wellington better off than Canberra - Newstalk ZB

Wellington seems to be in a far better position than its counterpart across the Tasman.

Roy Morgan Research has released a report looking at relationships between Auckland, Wellington, and the rest of New Zealand.

Chief executive Michele Levine says she's made some interesting observations about how Wellington compares to Australia's capital Canberra.

She says while government is a huge focus for the city - Wellington's not sterile, and people here aren't transient.

"I think Wellington is actually a more established city.

"It has quite a strong arts and community around theatre and arts and things like that, and it has a population that lives here and belongs here."

Michele Levine says Wellington's relationship with the rest of New Zealand is much healthier than Canberra's with the rest of Australia.

New figures suggest Wellington's employment rate is on the up.

Ms Levine says while Wellington's population isn't growing nearly as fast as Auckland, its employment rate is better.

"And what we're seeing there in terms of employment is in fact employment levels have grown.

So there's more employment in Wellington than previously."

She says Wellington appears to have a slightly higher average age, and higher incomes.
