Fashfest sparkles in Canberra - ABC Online

From flowy frocks, to fashions on the field and dresses that are a little bit cheeky.

Canberra designers have been showcasing their collections at the city's first fashion festival.

Organisers Andrea and Clint Hutchinson say the idea behind Fashfest is to showcase local talent.

"We've wanted to do it for a while," Ms Hutchinson said.

"Because as everyone knows, people say, or tend to say nothing ever happens in Canberra, and especially in the fashion industry.

"It is really hard for fashion designers to make it here in Canberra because we are a smaller town."

"We feel that fashion designers have a chance to do a degree here but then they feel like they need to go to Melbourne or Sydney to do a career in fashion and we just wanted to try and change that."

Tickets for the four night event have sold-out as the city's best dressed flock to a vacant office block to see the works of about 30 local designers.

"It is really cutting edge, they're actually on par with what's happening in the other states but there's maybe you know a bit of a lack of confidence," Clint Hutchison said.

Among the featured collections are garments by Jade Sargent.

After graduating from the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) last year she's started her own label producing zero waste garments and millinery.

"It's about being comfortable, fun, sophisticated and just kind of a bit glamorous - no one really wears hats anymore," Ms Sargent said.

Fashion designers aren't the only local talent, all of the musicians, make-up artists and models are from the national capital.

One of the models, Angela Timani has welcomed the chance to strut her stuff on a local stage.

"Thank god for Fashfest, so we finally get a chance to get on a catwalk and not have to go interstate to do so," Ms Timani said.

"I mean it's the first time in Canberra that anything this massive has happened in terms of fashion and I just think everyone is getting great exposure, not only the models but designers and everyone involved."

Organisers say Fashfest will be an annual event.
