Canberra told to butt out - The Australian

THE sensible decision of the Queensland government to help alleviate animal suffering and damage to the pastoral industry caused by drought, will proceed. Canberra has been told to butt out - perhaps only temporarily.

Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke will see if he can introduce new measures to ensure he has the final say over state parks and to ensure Canberra's power to dictate.

This interfering federal government wants to control every aspect of our lives, to take over everything, to run everything.

It is time a genuine attempt at a federalist approach was undertaken, consistent with the Constitution.

Tony Abbott says that within two years of a change of government, the Coalition will produce a white paper on reform and the responsibilities of different governments, to ensure that the states are sovereign.

That might be seen as providing a modicum of hope for a new approach, but that hope tends to be dashed by Abbott's support for the referendum on constitutional recognition of local government, a centralist measure.
