MOTIVATED: These nine senior students of Rukenvale Public School are raising money to fund their school excursion to Canberra. Kathleen Johnston ONE small school is determined not to miss out on a trip to the big smoke, with the kids of Rukenvale Public School taking it into their own hands to find the money to get them there.
Principal Kathy Johnston said many Year 5 and 6 students from across the state and beyond took an annual excursion to Canberra, but the cost often made it hard for small schools to make the trip.
So hard, in fact, that Rukenvale had only made the journey once - two years ago.
On the week-long excursion in August, the nine senior students from the 21-student school will get to visit the War Memorial, Parliament House, Old Parliament House and Canberra museum, among others.
They'll even get to visit the snow for a day - something most, if not all, of the students have never seen.
This was a major trip for the seniors, Ms Johnston said, but it was a big cost to families, especially in terms of transport, but she would hate to see them miss out.
"They can learn about all these things, but there's nothing like actually going there," she said.
"These children are our future - you never know, this trip could inspire a future prime minister."
The students are very excited about the trip, but at the moment the biggest concern is the funds to take them there.
As well as holding a barbecue, thanks to the school's P&C committee, the students are taking matters into their own hands and writing to companies seeking donations.
"They're trying to take some responsibility for the fundraising, not just leaving it to their families," Ms Johnston said. "They want to have some input.
"Students are very motivated in their writing in the hope that they can (raise enough money). It's nice to see the kids very enthusiastic and so motivated."
