Canberra Close Up- Julie McKay - ABC Local

The accolade of ACT Young Australian of the Year has given the Executive Director of UN Women Australia, Julie McKay, a new platform to spread her message of support for disadvantaged women.

"What it's done is launch [me] and Women Australia and the work that we do into a bit of a spotlight around why it is that we're out there trying to empower women and support the lives of women and girls in developing countries," Julie told Alex Sloan on 666 ABC Canberra.

The ACT Young Australian of the Year admitted the title had given her more confidence to have conversations around fundraising and asking others to help.

"I'm able to say to the Australian community: 'Look, there really is this big issue that we need to be supporting women overseas.'"

Julie revealed she is tempted to talk about local issues all of the time, but the community preferred to lend support to specific people or communities.

"People want to support 'a' shelter or 'a' person experiencing violence," Julie said.
