Suns too good for Giants in Canberra - Sportal.com.au

Gold Coast notched their highest-ever score to claim their second victory of the 2013 season, kicking seven of the last nine goals to survive a final-quarter surge from Greater Western Sydney.

Charlie Dixon kicked six goals for the Suns, including two in the fourth quarter, to set a new record for the Suns as they triumphed 21.22 (148) to the Giants 16.8 (104) at StarTrack Oval in Canberra.

The Suns had led by 25 points at half-time but GWS kicked five goals to three in the third quarter to drag themselves back into the contest before slotting two of the first three majors of the final term to move within 13 points of Gold Coast.

With the game in the balance, the Suns kicked the next five goals to end the Giants' resistance and take the four points, winning by the largest margin in the club's history.

Gold Coast captain Gary Ablett had 32 disposals and kicked three goals in a brilliant performance, while Matthew Shaw and Jarrod Harbrow provided handy assistance with 26 touches each.

Dixon kicked 6.2 to surpass Nathan Krakouer's previous record-haul of five goals, while Zac Smith joined Ablett with three majors to his name.

For the Giants, co-captain Callan Ward had 31 possessions, while Devon Smith (26 disposals) and Dylan Shiel (24) were both good contributors for the hosts.

Smith, Jeremy Cameron and Setanta O'hAilpin all kicked three goals for GWS but the Giants would have been left disappointed after being blown away in the latter stages of the fourth quarter.

Ablett kicked the opening goal of the fourth term to put Gold Coast 23 points ahead but when O'hAilpin and Devon Smith scored within two minutes of each other, the Giants were back in the match.

Having reduced the Suns' margin to just over two goals, GWS were unable to get any closer to the visitors as Smith, Dixon, Brandon Matera, Ablett and Danny Stanley all kicked majors in the next nine minutes to seal the win.
