THE Gillard government has been in dire straits pretty much since the 2010 election, but last Monday marked new lows. The Nielsen poll, widely seen as the least volatile, gave federal Labor a primary vote of 30 per cent, down five points, compared with the Coalition's 47 per cent, up four points. The polling also indicated that Tony Abbott had overtaken Julia Gillard as preferred prime minister by four points.
Of course we have seen poll slumps as bad as this - and even worse - before. The difference is that the latest Neilsen poll comes just six months before the opening of the election campaign Gillard has notionally scheduled for the middle of August. Conventional wisdom has it that a gap that wide can't be bridged in such a short time.
