A severe thunderstorm warning is in place for a large section of NSW, with Canberra also part of the warning area.
The Bureau of Meteorology said severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, large hailstones and damaging winds.
Locations which may be affected include Nowra, Bowral, Goulburn, Cooma, Yass, Wagga Wagga, Albury, Deniliquin, Griffith, Hay, Wilcannia and Ivanhoe.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should move cars under cover or away from trees and secure loose items around your house and yard.
Keep clear of fallen power lines, creeks and storm drains, don't attempt to walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
If trapped by flash flooding, the SES advises to seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.
An update from the Bureau of Meteorology is due at 6.50pm
