Growing up in Boston in mid 70's Betsy Dixon says her life was pretty typical, aside from both her parents dying before she was 13.
"You know how there are stories about people who always knew what they were going to do by the time they were five ... that wasn't me. I had no idea what I wanted to do. I probably figured I would just have a very ordinary, normal kind of life," she says.
But judging from the stories she shared with a Now Hear this Audience in Canberra, her life appears to have turned out anything but ordinary.
Some of her adventures include working on Ted Kennedy's campaign when he ran for President (and meeting the Kennedys, which to a Boston girl in the 70's was like meeting royalty). Living in Cyprus (and sampling the antiquities, literally) and meeting her husband-to-be before moving to Australia despite his tales of all the dangers the country possessed including reptiles, arachnids and snakes.
"That was 16 years ago, I'm still here, none of the native wildlife has killed me and I'm actually pretty cool about the spiders now ... I've had a few ups and downs but I have to say I reckon it hasn't been that unordinary and uneventful life for this Boston girl."
