BILL Shorten flicked the switch to remote yesterday to be as far away as possible from the speculation surrounding the Labor leadership. After a 20-hour delay caused by bad weather and an ailing RAAF Challenger 604, the Workplace Relations Minister finally hightailed it out of the bosom of the Australian Workers Union conference on the Gold Coast to the quiet environs of a far-flung mining operation in the Northern Territory's Gulf country.
On the day that Shorten was portrayed as the kingmaker in Labor's leadership turmoil, words such as "Kevin Rudd", "September 14", "killing season" and "Newspoll" could not shake the ambitious cabinet minister from his equanimity.
